The year was 1983; a time of bad hairdo’s, Cyndi Lauper and Pac Man. From deep within Honda, a landmark development took place – the release of the GX Series Overhead valve (OHV) engine.
At the time, the OHV technology inherent in the engine was regarded as unnecessary, however in the 30 years since then the unit has been widely recognised as one of the most successful engineering developments in the industry.
In a 2003 interview, the Japanese engineer responsible for the GX Series OHV engine, Yonekazu Uestsuji, said that getting the engine past management at the time was incredibly difficult. “Some managers felt that the additional cost of OHV was not warranted”, he said at the time.
As history has shown, Uestsuji san persuaded not only his managers that the OHV was in fact a worthwhile product to invest in, but also the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) that utilised the engine in their products.
These days, OEMs and their customers love them. Honda Australia’s engine manager, Chris New, recognises the value that the GX Series OHV engine can bring to an OEM product, in diverse applications all over the country.
“With Honda’s 3-year warranty and ‘starts first-time every-time’ reliability”, Mr New said, “One thing you don’t have to worry about is whether your engine will perform.
“There’s a hugely diverse range of products that the GX Series engines are used in – too many to list – but our website is a great place to start looking”.
The website Mr New refers to is poweredby.honda.com.au. With a full listing of available engines, it details not only the product categories that incorporate Honda engines, but also Honda’s OEM partners who sell them.
